Benefits of Gentle Balance & Strength Training for Seniors

Gentle balance and strength training is essential for maintaining independence and preventing falls as we age. πŸ‘΅πŸ‘΄ These specialised exercise programmes offer numerous health benefits:

  • Fall prevention: Improves stability and reduces the risk of falls through targeted balance exercises
  • Increased strength: Builds muscle strength even in those with limited mobility
  • Enhanced confidence: Builds self-assurance in daily activities and movement
  • Social connection: Creates an opportunity to meet others and form supportive friendships
  • Better posture: Helps correct posture issues that can develop with age
  • Improved flexibility: Enhances range of motion in joints and muscles

The Steady As You Go programme was developed by Age Concern Otago in 2003 and is based on the internationally recognised Otago Exercise Programme. Research from the University of Otago has shown these classes not only improve physical capabilities but also enhance overall wellbeing and quality of life.

These gentle exercises are perfect for anyone who has recently completed physiotherapy, is recovering from surgery or injury, or simply wants to maintain their mobility. The exercises are performed at your own pace, making them suitable for various fitness levels within the limited mobility category.
